Would you hire your Centennial kid?

December 10, 2018

Ready for Centennials?
Here’s what you can expect from the next workforce.

Problem-solving

The good

They will be resourceful and seek creative solutions independently avoiding excessive need for attention.

The bad

They may hesitate to ask managers (and others) for help when appropriate or potentially shy away from collaboration if not convenient.

Generalist versus
specialist perspective

The good

Better able to roll with and even welcome change as they seek a variety of different experiences.

The bad

Will be anxious and perhaps impatient for new projects and experiences; managers will need to be flexible around rotational assignments and work.

Constant learning

The good

They will strive to improve products and processes and seek new solutions from multiple sources. They will build their skills to stay valuable and relevant and seek mentoring and coaching.

The bad

They may be challenged to balance opportunities for learning and creative brainstorming with requirements for specific performance and efficiency. Providing ready access to desired mentoring and coaching may be difficult.

Cross-domain knowledge

The good

They will bring a constant flow of new information and related sharing of what they know or have discovered.

The bad

Balancing telling with listening may be a struggle at times.

Independence and
self-sufficiency

The good

They will be proactive in asking about next steps in their career and developing personalized, unique plans to advance and grow.

The bad

Ongoing conversations about future plans will require adjusting managerial behaviors and evolving HR processes that have been often slow to change.
